Fall doesn't start on September 21st. It starts on that random Tuesday in late August when you suddenly want to throw away your entire life and buy a new sweater.
If you're feeling that itch, this is your official fall reset checklist. Not a bucket list of 100 things you won't do. A 27-step reset to make your apartment, your closet, your camera roll, and your brain feel like fall before fall actually hits.
Consider it your pre-fall intervention.
Why You Actually Need a Fall Reset
Summer is fun until it isn't. By late July, you're running on iced coffee, your apartment has that weird humid smell, your friendships are all group texts that say "we should hang soon!!" and your closet is 80% linen that wrinkles if you look at it wrong.
A fall reset isn't about becoming a new person. It's about closing your summer tabs. Literally and emotionally.
The Home Reset (Do This First)
This is not a deep clean. This is a vibe shift.
1. Swap the scent. Put the coconut candle away. Bring out the fig, the smoked vanilla, the weird expensive one you were saving. Your brain associates scent with season faster than anything.
2. Wash the sheets and the throw blankets. You know which ones. The ones that have had sunscreen on them since June.
3. Clean out one junk drawer, junk shelf, or junk corner. Not the whole house. One. The dopamine from one is enough to fuel the rest of this list.
4. Do the Nancy Meyers kitchen check. I wrote about this in my Nancy Meyers aesthetic breakdown open shelving, wooden cutting board left out on purpose, fresh lemons. You don't need a remodel, you need to style what you already have.
5. Change your phone background to the Wild Wallpaper fall pack. We make a new one every month for Social Club. It's free and it makes your brain think you have your life together.
The Closet Reset
6. Pull out 12 pieces for a transitional capsule. Not 30. 12. Think: one good trench, one oversized blazer, 2 pairs of denim (one light, one dark wash), a striped tee, a white tee, loafers, ballet flats, a sweater you actually want to wear. Full breakdown coming in our 12-piece transitional capsule post — bookmark it.
7. Retire the anxiety clothes. You know, the dress you keep even though you hate how you feel in it. If you put it on and immediately want to change, it goes in the donation bag. Fall is not the season for clothes that make you feel bad.
8. Get one pair of shoes resoled or cleaned. Cheaper than new shoes, makes you feel like a responsible adult.
9. Find your fall uniform and actually wear it on repeat. Mine is: vintage Levi's + ballet flat + striped sweater + tortoise glasses. What's yours? Decide now so you're not standing in your closet at 7:42am.
10. Book the nail appointment. August is the bridge month. I'm doing August nails that work for September too think chocolate brown, milky white, aura nails. Fall nail colors will be live next week and your tech is already booking up.
The Social Reset
Fall is friendship season. Summer is flaky. Fall is when people actually show up.
11. Do the friendship audit. If you're always the "chill one" who says "whatever works!" you're going to have a lonely fall. Text 3 people right now and say "Can we put a fall date on the calendar?"
12. Plan 3 fall activities NOW or you will not do them. The research is clear: if you don't put it on the calendar in August, you spend October saying "we should go apple picking" and never do. Pick 3. My go-to's: one farmers market morning, one bookstore crawl, one slightly woo-woo thing like a sound bath.
13. Clean up your close friends list. On Instagram and in real life. Who do you actually want seeing your fall?
14. Send the 3am voice note friend a real text. You know who. The one who gets the unhinged voice notes. Tell her you appreciate her before cuffing season starts.
15. Start a fall group chat. Name it something stupid like "Fall Girl Book Club But We Just Drink Cider." Use it to send cozy things.
The Brain Reset (The Important One)
16. The one-hour camera roll purge. Set a timer for 60 minutes. Delete screenshots, duplicate selfies, 400 photos of the same sunset. Create one album: "Fall Inspo." Put 20 photos in it that make you feel something.
17. Do a Pinterest board intervention. You have 14 boards called "aesthetic." Archive 10. Keep 4: Home, Style, Mood, and one wild card.
18. Write your fall anti-bucket list. 5 things you're NOT doing this fall. Mine: I'm not over-scheduling every weekend, I'm not buying another beige trend piece, I'm not pretending I like pumpkin spice lattes.
19. Pick your fall hobby and buy the thing. Knitting, pottery, running, reading, whatever. Buy the $28 starter thing so you actually do it. For me it's fall books, maybe even a special edition with sprayed edges.
20. Reset your money story for Q4. Check what you spent on "summer fun" and decide what fall you want. I linked my favorite soft life career reframe in soft life careers that actually pay rent fall is when we get serious again, but softly.
The Cozy Reset (The Fun Part)
21. Pick your fall watch list now. I'm doing 18 cozy fall movies that aren't Gilmore Girls again. Yes, we love Gilmore, but we have range.
22. Make your fall playlist. 15 songs. No skips. Start with one Norah Jones song, you're legally required to.
23. Restock your tea/coffee bar. The $12 syrup, the good mugs, the cinnamon. The small things make September feel like September.
24. Buy one good candle and one cheap one. Good one for living room, cheap one for bathroom. This is Nancy Meyers math.
25. Plan your first fall dinner at home. Not a party. A dinner. Two friends, soup, bread, candles. Put it on the calendar for second week of September. Fall friendships are built at tables.
26. Get your fall scent. Not body spray. Scent. Perfume, lotion, something that makes people say "you smell like fall."
27. Decide what kind of fall girl you want to be. Every fall we pick a new personality. This fall, I'm picking: woman who finishes her books, woman who hosts, woman who actually wears the sweaters she buys. Who are you picking?
